All That jazz (1979), dir Bob Fosse, *ing Roy Scheider, Jessica Lange - Musical : Won 4 Oscars
Chicago (2003) makes many references to this film because Bob Foss was busy putting up the Broadway version of Chicago when he made All that Jazz- a semi autobiographical film where life and art mingle seamlessly. People have compared it to Fellini's 8 1/2 though i think this is a very American film.
With outstanding musical set pieces and a deeply felt story of creative genius- All that Jazz has all the shades and moods of an artist. Death is celebrated and explored in a way that is unusual for Americans.
The film has memorable sequences - the one that gets discussed the most is Roy's scenes with Jessica Lange- what does she represent? If the world of glamour held magic for you- heres a good look inside at the heartbreak and tragedy that sits along the glory.
Come enjoy the film on Nandini's wonderful Terrace on 17th April, 2009 at 7pm.
this may be the 9th time that i saw the film- am still captivated by the neat editing and focussed storytelling. the fabulous women that stand out larger than the central flawed hero- so much more contained and real. and death, lovely in white waiting and watching for the last gasp.
