Munich - August 8th, 2009 @ 7 pm

Munich 2005 / Steven Speilberg /Eric Bana, Daniel Craig

The film is retelling of the Munich Massacre of 1972 and the Isreali governments reaction - an eye for an eye that sets off the search and killing of 11 Black september men. The second part has been highly debated and Speilberg chose to call it historical fiction which makes the films treatment very interesting. The story is laid out in a gripping way and the characters are unforgettable including a wonderful portrayal of Golda Meir in single sequence. The film is based on a book Vengence: the true story of Israel's counter terrorism team.

Nominated for 5 Academy Awards including Best Picture.

American Independence Day Screening
Amistad 1997/Col/English-Spanish-Mendes/ Dir- Steven Speilberg

*Starring - Morgan Freeman, Anthony Hopkins, Djimon Hounsou, Mathew McConaughey

Amistad is a film based on the true story of a slave mutiny that took place aboard a ship of the same name in 1839 and shows a legal battle that followed. It shows how, even though the case was won at the federal district court level, it was appealed by President Martin Van Buren to the Supreme Court. The film was nominated for many Oscars though Speilberg had to wait for a few more years before he won it.

Highly acclaimed for uncovering the legal status of slaves and american prejudices it shows how good men work realistically within an evil system to spare a few of its victims.

All That Jazz - 17th April 2009

All That jazz (1979), dir Bob Fosse, *ing Roy Scheider, Jessica Lange - Musical : Won 4 Oscars

Chicago (2003) makes many references to this film because Bob Foss was busy putting up the Broadway version of Chicago when he made All that Jazz- a semi autobiographical film where life and art mingle seamlessly. People have compared it to Fellini's 8 1/2 though i think this is a very American film.

With outstanding musical set pieces and a deeply felt story of creative genius- All that Jazz has all the shades and moods of an artist. Death is celebrated and explored in a way that is unusual for Americans.

The film has memorable sequences - the one that gets discussed the most is Roy's scenes with Jessica Lange- what does she represent? If the world of glamour held magic for you- heres a good look inside at the heartbreak and tragedy that sits along the glory.

Come enjoy the film on Nandini's wonderful Terrace on 17th April, 2009 at 7pm.
